Concrete Walkways That Welcome You Home

The walkway is the first thing guests touch when they arrive and the last thing they remember leaving. A cracked, heaving, or uneven front walk drags down the whole face of the house, and it is a trip hazard on top of that. Most walkway problems trace back to a thin slab poured on a poor base with no thought given to drainage.

We build concrete walkways across Vaughan and the GTA that stay level and safe for decades. Proper grading moves water away from your foundation, a compacted base keeps slabs from shifting, and control joints are placed to suit the walkway pattern so cracks stay hidden in the lines.

The Path That Sets the Tone

A front walkway does quiet work for curb appeal. A straight, generous walk in a clean broom finish reads classic. A gently curved walk in exposed aggregate or stamped concrete reads custom. Either way, the walkway should feel intentional, not like an afterthought poured to fill a gap.

We help you get the layout right before anything is poured. Width matters more than people think: a walk that is too narrow forces single file and looks cheap, while a comfortable width feels welcoming. We also plan how the walk meets the porch, steps, and driveway so the transitions are clean.

How We Build Walkways

Walkways fail at the base, so that is where we start. We excavate, compact granular base, and grade the walk to shed water away from the house, never toward the foundation. Forms are set true, steel goes in where the walk carries extra load, and the concrete is finished to your chosen texture.

Control joints are cut to match the walkway's rhythm, often lining up with the width so each panel is close to square. Square panels crack less and look better. We also keep the walk slightly above surrounding grade where possible, so water runs off instead of pooling on the surface.

Finishes for Walkways

Broom finish is the practical default for walkways: excellent wet traction, clean look, and budget friendly. Exposed aggregate is a step up in appearance with the same sure footing, and it hides winter wear beautifully. Stamped concrete lets the walk mimic flagstone or slate, which pairs well with stone veneer or brick on the house.

Borders, inlays, and step nosings are where walkways get character. A contrasting border along the edges, or a stamped medallion at the entry, turns a plain path into a designed one. If your entry has steps, we can pour them as part of the same job so everything matches.

Care Through the Seasons

Walkways see more foot traffic and more salt than almost any other concrete, since they are the path you clear all winter. A penetrating sealer every few years keeps meltwater and de-icer out of the surface. In the first winter, sand beats salt for traction while the concrete matures.

Keep downspouts from dumping roof water across the walk, and clear leaves and debris from the joints. Walkways built on a real base do not heave, but water pooling against the house is never good, so grading is something we check on every estimate.

Common questions

How wide should a front walkway be?

Wide enough for two people to walk side by side comfortably. Narrow walks look skimpy and feel awkward; we will recommend a width that suits your entry during the estimate.

Can a walkway be built for wheelchair or stroller access?

Yes. We can grade the walk to a gentle, consistent slope with no steps or lips, and keep the surface smooth but slip resistant. Tell us accessibility matters and we will design for it.

Do walkways need the same base as a driveway?

Walkways carry foot traffic, not cars, so the slab can be lighter. But the base prep is just as important. Most heaving walkways failed because of the base, not the concrete.

How do you keep walkway slabs from shifting or heaving?

Compacted granular base, proper drainage, and frost-depth awareness. In the GTA, frost heave is the enemy, and a slab sitting on well-drained compacted base moves far less than one poured on clay or fill.
